Biblical Questions Answered

Q:   Is It Okay To Gossip?

A:    My grandmother went to her church's Tuesday morning ladies' Bible study religiously.

When my mother asked her what they studied, she gave my mother the low-down on what members of the church divorced, had babies or married.

Instead of wanting to study the Word of God, my grandmother wanted to ingest the tasty morsels of gossip.

Gossip is popular. Otherwise television programs, such as Entertainment Tonight, The Insider and Access Hollywood wouldn't be needed. Neither would the tabloids and entertainment magazines at the grocery store check-out stands.

People just have to know who is seeing whom, who has gone mental, who is cheating on whom and who is having a baby in Hollywood.

It is our need to know that spurs the gossip industry. It is that same need that has shattered so many young lives in Hollywood. It is that need that has celebrities being chased by the paparazzi twenty-four/seven.

We are all guilty of gossip. Men would like us to think it's a woman thing, but that is not true. Gossip is not discriminatory. It attacks men and women alike.

What is gossip? Anything we hear about someone behind their back is gossip. Anything that we wouldn't say to their face is also gossip.

Most gossip is done in secret at beauty shops, on golf courses, in the board rooms, in churches and in schools.

Anything we have to hide is negative and counter-productive to our health.

Why is gossip so tasty? The Bible calls gossip dainty morsels (Proverbs 18:8 NLT).

I believe it is because we feel that our own lives are boring. Therefore we want to hear or read about the exciting details of other's lives--dead or alive--to live vicariously through them.

The same friends who gossip with us will gossip against us to their other friends. Most gossip is based entirely on rumors and on accounts that are second and third, and maybe even forth-hand.

It is difficult to get a straight story after that many hands have been involved.

Remember the game "Telephone"? We tell one person in the group something, and they tell the next person and that one tells the next. By the time it reaches the last person, the message has been altered.

It is the way with gossip. By the time, it reaches us after going through so many hands, it is revised and void of the original truth.

Why do people gossip? They are curious about other people's lives.

Instead of focusing on their purpose, they are focused on what others are doing. Their attention is on the wrong thing. They must return it to God and the needs of other people.

Ever notice that gossip never focuses on anything good. It always focuses on who did what to whom and who is cheating on whom.

Instead of saying, "Isn't it wonderful that Cathy and Tony are having a baby," they say, "Did you see how heavy Cathy is getting? Do you see how much time she spends with Hank? I bet he is the real father and not Tony. Poor, poor Tony!"

They have already tried and convicted Cathy and Hank without offering any kind of evidence or finding out Cathy and Hank's sides of the story.

Gossip isn't just cruel but deadly.

Let's say Tony is the jealous type, and he hears the rumors. He kills both Cathy and Hank without asking for their sides of the story.

Then he finds out later while sitting in prison that Cathy and Hank had been planning a surprise party for Hank's wife Stacey. Now not only has Tony ruin his own family but Hank's as well.

We may think this is couldn't happen or that it is an extreme case, but gossip and rumors destroy friendships and relationships more times than we know.

When we transferred to high school, gossip cost me the friends I had in junior high school.

I don't remember the rumor now, but they accused me of something I didn't do. They tried, convicted and banned me from their group no matter how hard I tried to protest.

Gossip is like dainty morsels. We all love to hear tidbits about others, but it is not fair to the people being gossiped about or to their spouses, parents, loved ones and children.

It is hard to miss the celebrity news, even if you don’t watched those entertainment gossip shows, because the professional newcasters now consider people entering rehabilitation centers and mental wards breaking news.

How many times are these celebrities entering rehabilitation centers because they can't deal with the constant media attention? The photographers from the news outlets? The paparazzi? The tabloids pasting their pictures on their publications and websites?

If we had to live with our every move being watched, we might turn to alcohol and drugs or go mental too.

Gossip causes dissension. Any time gossip starts so do arguments.

Let's say Steve, Bob’s friend, told him that he saw Bob’s wife, Sally with another man at a club. Therefore Bob believes his wife Sally is cheating on him.

Bob confronts Sally, causing dissension between him and her. It also strains his relationship with Steve because he is the one who told Bob about it.

All of us love to hear the latest gossip, but do we ever think about how these rumors affect the people behind those rumors?

The next time someone gossips to us, we should imagine that they are speaking about our sisters, mothers, fathers or spouses.

Remember that this person they are speaking of is someone's child. What if this person talked about our children that way? What would we do?

We have to challenge ourselves to become gossip-free zones. We have to train ourselves not to listen to nonsense about other people.

It is none of our business who cheated on whom, who has been seen in a club with someone other than his wife. That is not our concern.

How can we be around people who are gossiping at the office? Or among our friends? We have to be vigilant enough to walk away from the conversation.

As much as we might want to hear it, we are better off if we walk away. Then we won't be a part of the ruining of the lives of those the rumors are about.

Whatever we hear, drops into our heart. Do we really want gossip to be in our heart? Out of the heart flows the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23 KJV), and we will muddy up those rivers if we listen or repeat gossip.

Ask God to help you control your gossip problem today.

Don’t try to stop doing it yourself. Every time you are tempted to gossip, just say, "Lord, I can’t stop this, but You can." Before you know it, you won’t have a desire to gossip anymore.

Bringing in the Sheaves - What is the Work of the Lord?
Jerry Ousley

For nineteen years Deb and I were the senior pastors of a small congregation in Crothersville, Indiana. The title "senior pastor" sounds like a very important position and in a way I suppose it is. But what is expected isn't always what we imagine when we think of a senior pastor. I don't know how it is in the large churches; perhaps the senior pastor stays busy taking care of assigning jobs and tasks that must be done. But when you're associate pastor is also your sister-in-law (as in our case), there isn't much task-assigning going on. To be frank, everything from doing weddings to mowing the lawn and cleaning the restrooms falls at your feet.

There were periods of time during those nineteen years that Deb and I both worked full-time jobs while serving as pastors, and there were other times when she didn't hold a full-time job. During those times I think she would have rather have had a job away from home because what she discovered was that she was doing most of the work at home and at church. Instead of eight hour shifts she found herself working twelve and fourteen hour shifts. When that happens there is definitely something wrong with that picture.

I'm not against pastors getting a salary, if their congregation can afford it, to help them. After all, they have bills to pay too. Some congregations may own a parsonage and the pastor gets to live there for free, but other pastors have to own or rent their own home. They usually have children who have school needs and like to eat once in a while. So there are definitely expenses that have to be met. But I must say that it really surprises me how much many people of a congregation begrudge what a pastor gets. For some reason they envision him or her sitting at home twiddling their thumbs while they work and slave on their jobs.

Folks it isn't quite that way. Most pastors of average size congregations not only have to spend time working on sermons and Sunday School lessons but they are also expected to do marriages of the people of the congregation, funeral services, often they are the church janitors, they constantly get phone calls from people wanting advice, and if one of the congregation gets sick in the middle of the night the pastor is expected to get up no matter how busy his day has been and cheerfully rush to the hospital to be by their side. He is to always have the right answers in times of need. If you really think about it that's a big demand on a person's time and a lot of pressure to know the right answer to everything.

Psalm 126:5-6 says, "Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy. He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him." We've discussed the work of the Lord. But the question arises, just what is the work of the Lord? We tend to define a lot of what I call "busy work" as being the work of the Lord. There are many things that need to be done in a congregation of people. Most churches have some type of fund-raiser going on, or, as we've already mentioned, keeping the building clean inside and mowing yards and doing gardening on the outside to keep the building looking pleasant and inviting. While these things may be necessary they aren't really "the work of the Lord."

Working for the Lord is doing what He puts in our hearts to win souls to Jesus Christ and to encourage, teach, and also discipline the people of God to make them better Christians so they can have a more fruitful life. This is the true work of the Lord. I personally believe that the Church is doing way more busy work today than they are the real work of the Lord. As times get tougher and tougher financially I believe that we should be looking for ways to do church business and busy work more simply instead of more elaborately, and concentrate more on the real "work of the Lord." There are too many Christians these days who are burdened down and that isn't what the Bible says about the work of the Lord. Perhaps we should be asking God what we really need to be doing to further His Kingdom instead.

Inspirations From God

Our Reaction Counts

time and chance happen to them all" Ecclesiastes 9:11 (AMP)

My mother and I went shopping one day when I was younger for socks at a store near my great aunt.

A thief stole a woman’s purse after she paid with cash.

The woman, distraught, said, "But I’m a Christian…"

Problems happen to the just and the unjust, Christians and non-Christians, but it is how we react to those problems that is our real strength.

My mother took authority and commanded that purse to come back to the woman in Jesus’ Name, and it did.

When we stand on the Word and believe it as our final authority, we sail through problems that would devastate others.

God Visits Us

And God has visited His people [in order to help and care for and provide for them]!" - Luke 7:16 (AMP).

Think about that! God visited His people in order to help and care for and provide for them. What a wonderful statement!

Our Father God is still with us today.

He is still wanting to help, care for and provide for us, but many times we are too busy doing all that ourselves, never allowing God to do what He loves to do best, which is to care for His children.

Believe The Word Only

The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. - Matthew 8:8

Do you have enough faith to say "Lord, speak the Word only"? Do you have enough faith to believe that what God has said He will do?

We have a book full of God’s promises, full of things that He has promised us, and if we can just believe, we can see God manifest those things in our lives.

So be like the centurion and believe that what God spoke, He will do.

From Spiritual To Physical

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, - Ephesians 1:3

When Jesus cried "It is finished," He gave us every spiritual blessing.

All of our blessings come from above, so all our blessings are spiritual blessings.

Every thing that is in this physical world started out as something in the spiritual realm.

Our only job is to thank God for what He has already given us, so that what is spiritual will manifest itself in our physical world.

God’s MASH Units

"Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes - Isaiah 54:2

When everyone else is cutting back, it is time for the Body of Christ to think expansion.

Churches and the Body of Christ are like MASH units, and this is a time when casualties of this economic crisis, casualties of the world’s system, are flooding in.

All of them are in need of God’s kind of guidance.

And we are His medical staff.

Therefore we have to be ready and prepared to receive all those who are hurting.

Return Trip
Pam Ford Davis

Do you make frequent travel plans? If you regularly book reservations by plane, train, or bus you will hear a customary question. "Will this be a one way trip; or do you need return trip arrangements?" It is much more convenient to get return tickets in advance. The thoughts of running out of money before you purchase a return trip ticket are alarming!

It is nice to see new places, and visit with family and friends; but most of us are happy to get back home and sleep in our own beds. We want a vacation; but have no plans of leaving home permanently! What about runaways? Can they go back home?

God's children sometimes wander far from home. "Come, and let us return to the Lord; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will build us up (Hosea 6:1 NKJ)." Make a return trip! He will be there to meet you. You'll recognize His voice and words of love. "Welcome back home!"

The Best Part of Waking Up is Jesus in Your Cup

So, I awoke this morning ready for some time with God. On the way down the stairs, I could smell the coffee brewing, Praise God for coffee timers!
As I sat, praying and working through a day in my bible study,I was just really enjoying myself. I reflected on how a friend of mine had mentioned her love of pairing her study time with coffee. We discussed how we almost felt guilty that we sometimes went for the coffee before the Word. But, I've re-thought it, and well, I think there is a happy medium.

I am doing the study, "A Woman After God's Own Heart". The focus over the last two weeks being the importance and blessing of prayer. This was a spiritual kick in the butt for me as I knew my prayer life was lacking, but prayer has been creeping into my mind (A shout out to HS for that, thank you!). Anyhow, as I sat, reading, studying, and enjoying coffee, I allowed some spiritual ADD to creep in and my mind started wandering away from the pages to ponder how much I love this time every morning with God. Truly, I feel naked without it.

I sat, sipping away, checking out my new mug from my friend Kelli, just enjoying this time.
The thought came that the coffee wasn't even all that good, I had forgotten my regular sprinkle of cinnamon, didn't add enough splenda, and...the kicker...this was half caff. coffee....!!!! I know, whats the point of drinking that!?????

Okay, coffee tangent over, my point being, I was very much convicted that this time in the morning is all about God, growing in relationship with Jesus. Really, whats a cup of coffee without a good friend anyways? Its the relationship that seems to make the cup of coffee better right? Its no fun sitting at starbucks with a dream drink, which by definition would include whipped cream, thats just a side note. Anyhow, no fun sitting at starbucks without a friend. Those comfy seats, you know, everyone covets them, are made for conversation.

And there it is. My half caff. coffee (the horror!),with not enough splenda, lumpy couch, but yet, felt as thought I was at starbucks having that wicked awesome coffee, not by delusion, but made better, made meaningful, made memorable, by the company, the conversation, the listening, the prayer. So, even though I pair my early morning quiet time with coffee, as long as I am filling up on Jesus, the actual coffee is just my whipped cream.

Its the true content that matters, our time in the Word, our relationship with Him..... Good to the last drop.

Water In The Pipe....
Shannon Heiden

Beautiful One, did you know that with enough pressure applied to your life, you can break?
Even the most anointed, faith filled, powerful people can break if enough pressure is applied to their lives.

The fact is; we all have a breaking point, and none of us knows where it is, until we reach it.

The Bible is filled with stories of men and women just like us. They had desires and dreams, as well as weaknesses, vulnerabilities and pain. What made these men and women notable in the history of Gods Word? Were they so powerfully awesome, sinless, and favored by God? What made these people catch the attention of God and stand out? Could it be that they just took him at his Word, and believed him?

Is it really that simple?

Beautiful One, why is it that when we encounter trying times, we can forget that there is nothing new under the sun? Our trials may be new to us, but the truth is; someone somewhere has walked through the same thing either before, or after us. Which of us remembers in the midst of trouble, that our trials are our teachers? They are meant to define our faith, not destroy it.

When we examine the lives of great men and women, the very things that made them great- was not their successes. But the persevering through the enormous odds that they each faced in getting there. They never gave up!

Beautiful One, let me remind you that there will be seasons in life, where you will feel great pressure. There will be times of turmoil and confusion, where nothing makes sense, including God.

During these times, everything is shaken. Our faith, value's and our principles. Everything that we thought we had a handle on, could in a blink of an eye, seem instantaneously out of our grasp.

Think of some of the people God used. Take Elijah for instance. God did amazing, powerful things through him. But the mighty prophet still dealt with depression and fear. You can find him laying under a juniper tree wanting to give up and die.

Then there was Abraham. The one God said was righteous because of his faith. And yet, he was a liar. Abraham feared man more than God by telling a king Sara was his sister, not his wife. Abraham also tried to bring Gods promise to pass through his wife's plans by fathering a child with another woman.

Who can forget Peter? The handpicked Apostle who was Gods choice to be the first Pastor of the Christian Church. Peter walked closely with the Lord Jesus for three and half years, and yet, he cursed and still had a temper. His temper usually flared more than his faith did. Peter experienced firsthand the pain of walking away from God after he denied knowing him out of fear of what would happen to him.

Take a good look at Rahab? Many did, she was a prostitute. What heavenly good could this woman's earthly behavior ever done to have made her way into the Bibles Hall of Faith?

None of it. In fact, none of Elijah's, Peter's or Rahabs behavior under pressure totally pleased God.

But their faith in who God was and what He could do, did.

God can use any person and situation He chooses. Shocker, I know, the Pharisee in us has a hard time with this truth.

There are countless men and women that God used, and he didn't use them because they were holier than most, or because they didn't experience some dysfunction. He used them in spite of them, and the pressures they each faced.

The good news is; He still does.

If you really think about it, God will never find anyone to use who has it all together. There is only One that is good and that is God himself.

The truth remains that God is God, and He has the ability and power to take any pressure and breaking point in our lives and use it for his glory.

He can use a donkey; giving it a voice to warn and speak commonsense to us. He can take fear, the kind that puts a man into hiding. He can meet that fearful man, call him by his true name- Gideon man of valor. And in one hour God turns the faint and fearful into the mighty and memorable.

How about Samson? He lost all of his strength due to the deceptions of Delilah and yet God gave him back the strength of angels. Somewhere he'll take a shepherd boy and topple a giant. God will take the pressures of life and use them to push us through the pipe of adversity.

We will burst forth like never before, and God will receive all the glory and praise that is due him.

Beautiful One, our tragedies are actually the blueprints for our triumphs. How great will we really know God to be, if our trouble hadn't told us so? The apostle Paul, one of the greatest witnesses that ever lived and who never met Jesus face to face, explains it this way:

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. (2 Corinthians 4:8 NIV)

Simply said; we are water in a pipe. Sometimes our lives flow and run smoothly. Other times, some junk gets caught in there and it slowly decreases our flow. After awhile, we are nothing more then a slow drip, then the water stops flowing altogether. Meanwhile the pressure is building up, and increasing.

Eventually, the pipe will either burst from the pressure, or we will allow our God to skillfully reach in and pull out the muck, so that we may flow forward.

And through it all, the choice remains to be ours....

Beautiful One, just believe!

Whose Camp Are We In?
Rick King

We know the Bible states in Galatians 5:22 and 23 about the fruit of the Spirit. This fruit is of God's Spirit, so when we are walking in Him this will be the fruit that we exhibit. Yet, when we are not walking in this fruit, whose camp are we in?

We are told to walk in the spirit. This doesn't say walk in (a) spirit, but in (the) spirit. The spirit is God's Spirit. A spirit could be any spirit, but not necessarily of God. We are told in 2Ti 1:7, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." According to this passage fear is a spirit. It is not a spirit that exhibits the fruit of God's Spirit, so it must be a demonic spirit. When we are walking in (a) spirit of fear, we are walking in the devil's camp, not God's. The same is true with unbelief, unforgiveness, resentment, anger, bitterness, and lust of any kind, greed, hate, and many others. This does not mean that we are not a Christian and have not accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior; it just means that we are not walking in God's Spirit.

1Jo 2:9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
1Jo 2:11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
1Jo 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
1Jo 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

One of the fruit of God's Spirit is love. Hate is not the Holy Spirit fruit. The Word says that he that hates is walking in darkness.

Anything in opposition to God's Word is therefore not walking in the Spirit. It is walking either in the flesh or in another spirit. Depending on what spirit is manifesting through us determines whether we are walking in God or the devil. I have heard many say that because they have accepted Jesus that they are walking in the Spirit. Obviously this can not be true. We can't serve two masters. We can not serve God and the devil at the same time. We can't love and hate a person at the same time. We can't walk in faith and fear at the same time. We can't walk in joy and depression at the same time. The list goes on and on. We are told in, "Ro 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" The issue then is not whether Jesus is our Savior; it is who are we allowing to be in control? It will be the Holy Spirit, our flesh, or the devil. When we are a Christian, and we yield to our flesh as a normal practice, we give the enemy legal ground to come in a make a stronghold in our mind. This stronghold will control our beliefs and actions. God desires His people to be free and walking in His Spirit. Yet, we are learning to make the correct choices and to focus on the things of the Spirit of God rather than the devil.

Maybe you have not considered this, but all spirits have fruit. Not just the Holy Spirit. The devil's spirit has fruit also. That is why we are told that we shall know them by their fruit. Let us work on getting set free from the fruit of the devil and the flesh so that Jesus can be glorified through us as we exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit. We are told that according to our faith be it unto us. If we believe that fear is just us, then we have been deceived by the devil into thinking that the fear is "just me". The Word says that fear is a spirit, not a person. When we come into agreement with the devil and believe that it is us instead of a spirit, then we are walking in a lie in our belief system. We are actually saying that God is a lair and the devil is true. This is dangerous territory. We have given the enemy legal ground and are setting our self up for a fall. Fear is the fruit of a demonic spirit of fear. If we sign on the dotted line and decide that it is us, then we are in bondage and the devil is going to steal from us.

I hope and pray that this little article will help someone to realize whose spirit that they are walking in. If a wrong one, then cry out to God for deliverance. He is faithful and will deliver you in His way and time. He wants you free to be in fellowship with Him and be used by Him. Please give the Lord a chance to set you free for His plans and purposes. You will be glad that you did.

I am a 60 year old Born-Again spirit filled Christian, that has been saved for 30 years. Jesus found me when I was suicidal. I learned real quickly that I was powerless to be in control of my life, so I let Jesus take over. He has chosen me to be a warrior for Him. WE win, if we fight His way. - Rick King

Will You Choose the Word or the Worm?
Kelvin Gilmore

The Word became flesh and dwelled with mankind.
But most were blinded by sin so the Word they declined.

For the Word shines light on the darkness of man.
Sinful habits that has been with him, since his life began.

The Word will dig up the worms lying dormant in men souls.
These Worms causes a man to sin against God beyond their control.

Man is presented with a choice whether to choose the Word or the worm.
One will bring lasting joy while the other brings enough pain to make him squirm.

These worms are the demons that every man most resist.
A man must be completely submitted to God-for these demons will persist.

When a man receives Jesus he also receives God's Word,
Then the power of God devours a man's worm, like a Bird.

Let the Word expose everything that restricts the light from shining through.
Like Jesus, let the whole world see you die in your flesh but see a resurrected new you.

Sing Praises To His Holy Name

I love praise and worship music with lyrics that glorify His Holy name, and lyrics that proclaim His awesome power and majesty. Many of them are songs of thanksgiving for Who He is, and for what He has done. When I hear that music, my emotions are often tearful, joyful, humble and uplifting - all at the same time.

Recently I listened to a song I've heard many times before, but this time as I focused on the lyrics, they held a special meaning and significance. I'd like to share the words as penned by the songwriter, and offer my thoughts.

"Shout to The Lord"

My Jesus, my Savior, Lord, there is none like You;
All of my days I want to praise the wonders of Your mighty love.
My comfort, my shelter, tower of refuge and strength;
Let ev'ry breath, all that I am, never cease to worship You.

Chorus
Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing
Power and Majesty, praise to the King;
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name.
I sing for joy at the work of your hands,
Forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.

There are many examples of praise, worship and thanksgiving throughout Scripture. The children of Israel were very expressive people with singing, dancing, raising of hands and arms, and making music using a variety of musical instruments in their praise and worship of Almighty God.

A few examples from Scripture that teach of their passionate worship are summarized here:
2 Sam. 6:14 David danced before the Lord with all his might.
Ps. 47:1,2 Clap your hands and shout with joy.
Ps. 63:4 Lift up hands in praise.
Ps. 66:1,2 Make a joyful noise and sing glorious praise to His Name.
Ps. 95:1,2 Sing for joy with thanksgiving.
Ps. 149:3 Praise His name with dancing and make music to Him.
Ps. 150:3-5 Praise Him with the sounds of many instruments.

Just as the children of Israel worshiped, may we also praise God's greatness and glory with all that is within us shouting the Good News from the highest mountain so the whole world might hear.

Psalm 96:1-6 (NKJV)
1. Oh, sing to the LORD a new song!
Sing to the LORD, all the earth.
2. Sing to the LORD, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
3. Declare His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all peoples.
4. For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all gods.
5. For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the LORD made the heavens.
6. Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

The last line of the 'Shout To The Lord' chorus reads, "Nothing compares to the promise I have in You." With the world crumbling all around us, with turmoil everywhere we look, and with Israel surrounded by armies seeking to destroy her, we know that God is in control and that He holds tomorrow in the palm of His hand. Oh, what rest, comfort, and assurance we have in His promises!

Will you join me with raised voices and joyful hearts to sing praises to Him - giving all honor and glory to our Lord and King? Amen...and I pray we will do it today, tomorrow and forever!

During retirement, my prayer is that I might serve the Lord by sharing the Gospel through my writing. As the Lord leads, my work will inform, challenge and encourage. I also enjoy Biblical theme woodcarving, Bible studies and Christian music. Watch, pray and keep looking up! - Donald Mehl

It's Time to Shine

Naomi Cassata

Are you shining? I hope so. I'm not talking about putting your charming personality or your splendid talents on display for all to see. Rather, are you allowing God's glory to shine through your life? Too often we think God's glory is something mystical or untouchable, something that we have no business even talking about. But this is not so. In fact, we read of one man in the Bible that wanted to know God so intimately that he declared, "Please, show me your glory" (Exodus 33:18), and God honored him by revealing His very nature to him. This man was Moses.

Recently I have been reading about Moses guiding the Israelites through the wilderness. I have been soaking up each chapter not only to fully understand the story but to gain insight into God's nature. So how do we come to understand the God we serve? We are told in Philippians 2:6 that Jesus has the very nature of God. Through Jesus' life we come to understand a deeper level of who God is and His heart towards us. It is one of compassion and love. God absolutely loves mankind. If He didn't, He could of destroyed this world with all its wickedness and rebellion a long time ago. But we come to understand through Him sending Jesus that He wants the world reconciled to Him. He hasn't abandoned us; he has reached out to us.

CHOICES

God's choices reflect His very nature as well. When Moses stood on Mount Sinai and pleaded with God to show His glory to Him, this is what God revealed: "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation" (Exodus 34:6-7). Moses had a pure revelation of God's nature and it caused him to respond in the following way: verse 8 says, So Moses made haste and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. After Moses' encounter with God's glory, we are told his face shone. It was obvious that he had been with God. The same is true today. The more time we spend with God, the more our lives will shine as well. Not necessarily the skin of our face like Moses, but our hearts will shine with God's nature. It's literally impossible to come near God and stay the same. Changes happen in us when we get closer to our Creator, and it will definitely show!

There is something pure and righteous about God's nature. What a relief that is! Can you imagine if the Creator of the earth was evil, unjust, prideful and malicious? What hope would we have? He would not care for mankind other than to abuse or use us. But thankfully our God is not like that. Actually, He is the total opposite, and the more we comprehend this, the more love and appreciation we have for Him.

SHINING BEFORE ALL MEN

Is your life glowing with the glory of God? I remember my first real job as a law firm secretary. I had just graduated college and was both excited and yet nervous. The only thing I knew about law was jury duty, and I didn't think that was going to help me out any. As I began my first week, the lawyers began to pile on the work. I had a ton of questions and no one to really train me. There was another secretary that worked there that was extremely helpful. Although I hated interrupting her so much, I always went to her when I was in a jam. As the days went by, I knew there was something different about her. Despite her heavy load, she never became annoyed with my many questions. In fact, she seemed happy to help me out. I instantly liked her and her attitude. It didn't take me long to find out she was indeed a Christian. She was allowing God's glory to shine through her by the virtues of patience and joy. Too often we think in order to radiate God's glory we must be doing "spectacular" things to get others' attention. When really, it is through our normal everyday lives that we have the chance to let Him shine through us.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Jesus taught us that it's through our "light" that others will turn to God. The light is referring to Jesus in us. There is nothing good in us without Christ. When his nature is being lived through us, others will be graced with his goodness. If we can't love the unlovely, they won't know God's love towards them. We are His hands, his feet and His voice to the world. How bright are you allowing your light to shine? You will only shine as bright as you are willing to deny yourself. You see, we are selfish beings. Most of what we do is for our benefit, but we are called to deny ourselves and consider others better than ourselves. When we do this, we can't help but treat others with love and respect, even when they don't deserve it.

The Search and The Delivery

JOHN DE SILVA

In May 2006, I was in command of a ship which was required to load cargo at the port of Point Noire in Congo. The cargo included twenty six portable-cabins which were loaded on deck.

On the morning of the first day after sailing from port we discovered four stowaways who were hiding in a hold. On querying them they told us that, there was another person who boarded ship with them - in disguise.

Immediately after discovering the stowaways, it was decided to return to Point Noire to disembark them. Whilst the ship was returning to Port, a thorough search was carried-out to apprehend the 'lost one'-- still absconding stowaway. Searching for one man in hiding on a large ship is not an easy task. He could have been hiding in any of the cabins loaded on deck and each cabin was fitted with at least three compartments. From the time the ship was turned around, we had about fifteen hours for the search - until we return to Point Noire. These hours however were counted as ' delayed hours' and all these were delays meant losses to the owners.

It appeared that, prior to sailing from Point Noire, my crew under the leadership of the chief officer had not delve the stowaway search operation.

My mind was in a whirl. Delays were my responsibility as was everything else that happened on the ship. There were a myriad of thoughts in my mind

While my officers and crew carried-out the search through the night. There was something more I did however -- I prayed. And during my prayers I got a message from God: the location of the absconding stowaway. On the following day, at 5.00 AM, I called my chief officer, and told him where exactly I wanted the search carried-out. After listening to me, he said, "Captain we have already checked the cabin that you are referring to, and I assure you that, the man was not there".

I ordered: re-check the cabin and gave him the exact location. The search party went in there, and within few minutes I heard a loud cheer. The Chief Officer returned to the navigating bridge where I was waiting, and informed me that they discovered the stowaway.

I thanked and praised God.

My crew were amazed. The chief Officer said "Captain, believe me we searched that cabin!" Then he asked me, " Do you have a supernatural power?" My Chief Officer was a Myanmar national and a Buddhist.

I said to him," I do not have any super-natural power. But whole of last night I prayed asking God's help to find the man and during my prayers I got a message from God, giving me the exact location where he was hiding."

Everything is possible when you get closer to God. I share this experience with anyone who is looking for an encounter with holy spirit

Drinking From The Fountain
Brenda A.

Pure refreshing water
Flowing from Thy Mountain
Oh give me this water
That I never thirst again

Water that we drink on earth
Is sometimes short supplied
Drink from water on high
And you'll never more die

Down from God's mountain
Bubbling, water springs
Crystal spouting waters
Let me evermore drink

This water's never stagnant
And never fears a drought
This ever flowing water
Is pure without a doubt

Pure refreshing water
Flowing from God's Mountain
Oh give me this water
That I never thirst again

Brenda A.

The Bible says: --- he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6:36 Here, the fountain of water is an emblem of peace, happiness, plenty; and the essential thought in its flowing from the throne is, that all the happiness of heaven proceeds from God! Wonderful! Jesus is waiting to open the well of living water, which springs up to eternal life, of which if we drink we never thirst. This continuing water sheds its blessings on a world of sin and its end is everlasting life. Whosoever drinks of this shall never thirst, but it shall be in his heart a pure fountain springing up to eternal joy.

Water us daily with this life giving water

Being Thankful Even When We Don't Want to Be

Jerry Ousley

Another Thanksgiving Day. Of course we should be thankful each and every day of our lives, but today we have set aside a special holiday whose theme is to be thankful. We've got a lot to be thankful for. The economy may be bad. Some have lost their jobs and some have even lost their homes, yet we are alive which means that we've had food and clothing. It may not be what we've been used to but still God has been good to us.

I have to remind myself of these things often. It's easy, when we have been used to having more, to complain, grumble and gripe because things have changed. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us that we should be thankful in all things also stating that this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning us. Does this mean that we should be thankful for the bad experiences, tragedies, sicknesses, hurts and pains in our lives? I don't think we should be thankful for those negative experiences but I do believe that we should be thankful for how God brings us through them and for the lessons we learn from them.

I remember the first Thanksgiving wherein I discovered the wonderful taste of turkey. More than likely I had eaten it before that but I couldn't remember it. This was a lot of years ago and I was very young. For some reason I don't remember eating turkey before that day. But I vividly remember that particular time. I thought it was the best meat I had ever tasted in my very short life. To this day turkey continues to be one of my favorite meats. Most people complain about all that left-over turkey but not me. I just love all those turkey sandwiches, turkey this and that that stems from trying to use up what's left of that bird. So I guess that's one thing I'm thankful for; I'm thankful that God gave us turkey.

Being thankful means that we give God the glory and we are grateful for today. But are we really thankful? We should be. You see, those who believe in God, trust Him, and have given Him their lives, have been granted the privilege of being taken care of by Him. Even those who haven't given themselves to God, don't believe in Him and wouldn't even think about trusting Him benefit as a byproduct of His blessings.

Jesus told a story in Matthew 18 that illustrates how many live today. He told of a king who decided it was time for all his debtors to pay up. One particular servant owed a great debt. It might as well have been a million dollars and the king knew that there was no way that this servant would ever be able to repay him in his lifetime. So he ordered this servant and his family to be sold as slaves in order to recover some of his investment.

The servant fell at his feet and begged him for more time. The king, knowing that the rest of the servant's life wouldn't yield repayment, felt sorry for the man and so he graciously forgave him of it all. He wiped his slate clean.

Now you'd think that this servant would have been grateful; so grateful in fact that his life would have been changed; but nothing doing. He left the king's court, went straight out to a fellow servant who owed him a small amount let's say fifty bucks. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded that he pay it in full right then and there. When he couldn't this ungrateful servant had his fellow servant thrown into prison until he could pay up. Of course, when the king found out about it he did the same thing to this wicked, ungrateful servant.

We might say that we'd never do such a thing. But is this true? How often have we had hard feelings towards a fellow human being who might owe us, even after we have been forgiven of such a great debt of sin towards our King God our provider; God Almighty?

This day commemorates being thankful. But perhaps it's high time that we learn to really be thankful, and not just on Thanksgiving Day. Many of our lives have changed. With the Christmas season rapidly approaching we may not be able to buy all the gifts for our children as we once did. Maybe it's going to be a very lean year. But still we can be thankful.

If we are really thankful, and we express that not only to God but to others then isn't that a gift that will not only change our lives, but will also calm the storms that may be in our hearts?

Do You Know Jesus?

ADMIT THAT YOU ARE A SINNER.

According to Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." All of us have sinned at one time or another--whether it be by disobeying your mother by sneaking out, lying to your teacher about why you didn’t do your homework or having pre-marital sex. I John 1:8 says, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."

BELIEVE THAT JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOU.

In John 3:16, it states "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." God sent His Son Jesus to earth, and Jesus was crucified. He took thirty-nine stripes on his back with a whip and was spit upon. His hands and feet were nailed to a wooden cross while a crown of thorns dug into his head. His blood was shed on that cross, so your sins could be forgiven. The Bible says "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23). Since the price for sin was death, only God’s sinless Son could die in your stead. Three days later, though, He rose from the dead. Now instead of going to hell when you die, you have the chance to live eternally with Jesus Christ in heaven. And all He asks in return is that you "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." (Acts 16:31).

CONFESS YOUR SIN AND FORSAKE IT

I John 1:9 tells you how to accept Jesus as your Personal Saviour, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." The Bible also says "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9). Below you will find a sample prayer that you may follow. Confess your sins to God and ask Him to forgive you. Acknowledge that He died for your sin and rose from the dead. Ask Him to come into your heart as your Personal Lord and Saviour and dedicate your life to Him from this day forward.

Have you received Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?  Do you believe Jesus died to pay the price for your sin?  That He was raised from the dead?

Then just pray aloud, "Lord Jesus, I repent of all my sins.  Come into my heart and be my Lord and Saviour."

If you believed in your heart and confessed with your mouth, you are Born-again.  Let us know if you prayed this prayer.
